It is with deep sadness that we inform you that on Thursday, October 24, 2024, Academician Professor Bogdan C. Simionescu, an outstanding personality of Romanian and international chemistry, a mentor to many generations of chemists and director of the Romanian Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry “Petru Poni”, passed away.
He lectured as a visiting professor at renowned universities in the world: Kyoto, Mulhouse, Montpellier 2, Angers, Rouen, Paris National School of Mines, CEMEF – Sophia Antipolis, Dunkirk, Fribourg. He also lectured at the Center for Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Bogdan C. Simionescu was a researcher at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry “Petru Poni” in Iasi, which he headed as director in the years 2000-2014, and was also a co-founder of the CEEPN network and the ADVAPOL research laboratory established jointly with our Center.
In 2000, he was elected a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, and in 2009 a full member. He served two terms (2014-2022) as vice-president of the institution, president of the Iasi Branch of the Romanian Academy (2012-2014) and president of the Doctoral School of the Romanian Academy (2014-2022).

Professor Simionescu conducted research in the field of macromolecular chemistry, polymer physics, macromolecular technology, thiopolymers, physicochemical foundations of natural and synthetic polymers, biopolymers, intelligent materials and biologically active polymers.

He will remain in our memory as an outstanding scientist and friend.
