It is with deep sadness that we announce the death on Thursday, October 24, 2024 of Academician Professor Bogdan C. Simionescu, a prominent personality in Romanian chemistry and international, mentor to many generations of chemists and director of Romania’s “Petru Poni” Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry.
He has taught as a visiting professor at renowned universities around the world: Kyoto, Mulhouse, Montpellier 2, Angers, Rouen, Paris National School of Mines, CEMEF – Sophia Antipolis, Dunkirk, Fribourg. He has also taught at the Center of Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Bogdan C. Simionescu was a researcher at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry “Petru Poni” in Lasi, which he headed as director from 2000 to 2014, as well as a co-founder of the CEEPN network and the ADVAPOL research laboratory established jointly with our Center.
He was elected a correspondent member of the Romanian Academy in 2000 and a full member in 2009. He served two terms (2014-2022) as Vice President of this institution, President of the Iasi Branch of the Romanian Academy (2012-2014) and President of the Doctoral School of the Romanian Academy (2014-2022).
Professor Simionescu has conducted research in the areas of chemistry of macromolecular compounds, polymer physics, technology of macromolecular compounds,
thiopolymers, physicochemical basis of natural and synthetic polymers, biopolymers, smart materials and biologically active polymers.
He will remain in our memory as an outstanding scientist and friend.
