ECO-PLASTICE CONFERENCE, 2014

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “SILESIAN MEETINGS ON POLYMER MATERIALS” POLYMAT60

On June 30 – July 1, 2014, at the “Diament” hotel in Zabrze, the international conference “Silesian Meetings on Polymer Materials” (POLYMAT60) was held, organized by the Center for Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Zabrze to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of this oldest and largest institution of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Silesia.

The conference was a continuation of the Gliwice Polymer Seminar organized in Silesia since 1995 and the conference “Polymers on the Oder” POLYOR2011, the largest scientific meetings on polymers in Poland.

The aim of the conference was to create an opportunity to present the results of work on the study of polymer materials, including nanomaterials with special properties, polymers for applications in medicine, biotechnology and environmental protection. The meeting was held under the auspices of the European Polymer Federation (EPF), in cooperation with the Central and East European Polymer Network (CEEPN) and with the Gliwice, Opole Branches and the Polymer Section of the Polish Chemical Society. The conference partners were: the Zabrze City Office and the Prof. Z. Religia Foundation for the Development of Cardiac Surgery.

The conference was opened by Prof. Brigitte Voit – on behalf of the European Polymer Federation, then Prof. Janusz Lipkowski – Chairman of the Board of Curators – took the floor on behalf of the Dean of Faculty III of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Ms. Ewa Weber – Secretary of the City of Zabrze on behalf of the Mayor of the City of Zabrze Ms. Małgorzata Mańka-Szulik. The guests were welcomed by prof. Andrzej Dworak – director of CMPW PAN.

The conference was attended by 269 people representing Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine, Great Britain and Italy. The proceedings were grouped into 4 sections:

– nanocomposites

– environmentally friendly polymers

– materials for medical applications

– nanostructured materials

The conference program included lectures by 9 invited outstanding scientists working in the field of polymers: prof. Ann-Christine Albertsson (KTH School of Chemical Science and Engineering, Stockholm, Sweden), prof. Gerhart Braunegg (Graz University of Technology, Austria), prof. Bernd Bruchmann (BASF SE, Ludwigshafen, Germany), prof. Wim Hennink (Utrecht University, the Netherlands), prof. Klaus Müllen (Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, Germany), Prof. Mariastella Scandola (University of Bologna, Italy), Prof. Helmut Schlaad (Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Potsdam, Germany), Prof. Heikki Tenhu (University of Helsinki, Finland), Prof. Brigitte Voit (Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research, Dresden, Germany), 6 papers presented by: Dr. Jaroslav Mosnáček, Dr. Ivaylo Dimitrov, Prof. Sophie Guillaume, Dr. Leonid Ionov, Prof. Xintao Shuai, Dr. Dietmar Appelhans. During the poster session, the conference participants presented 216 posters.

The conference organizers and partners awarded prizes for the best posters in 4 categories:
