SYNADPOL – POLISH-SLOVAK LABORATORY OF POLYMERS AND BIOPOLYMERS

On October 10, 2008, the Polish-Slovak Laboratory SYNADPOL – “Synthesis and characterisation of advanced polymer and biopolymer materials” began its operations, located at the Polymer Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAN) in Bratislava and the Centre of Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CMPW PAN) in Gliwice and Zabrze.

The Laboratory’s task is to create a platform for integrating the intellectual and material resources of both institutions in order to conduct joint research in the field of polymers and biopolymers and materials obtained from them. Its establishment is the result of well-developed, fruitful Polish-Slovak cooperation documented with measurable results, supported by agreements between both academies, as well as European programs, including the European project TOK NANOSTIM coordinated by CMPW PAN.

According to the agreement signed at the beginning of 2008, the founding institutions, CMPW PAN and the Polymer Institute SAN, will provide their employees or employees delegated by them with access to equipment resources, research laboratories and knowledge gathered in these institutions. The Laboratory will create new opportunities for the integration of research conducted in both institutions and, using the experience of the participating teams, will strive to organize centers of excellence, in particular in the field of biocompatible and biodegradable polymers, polymers responding to environmental stimuli, synthesis of polymers with well-defined architecture, polymer materials for applications in medicine and biology and new methods of polymer characterization.

An important task of the Laboratory is to participate in the education of young scientific staff, in particular joint conducting of doctoral theses.

The ceremonial inauguration of the Laboratory’s activities took place during a working meeting at the Conference Center of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Smoleń. On the Slovak side, the laboratory was opened by the Vice-President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Prof. Ivan Zahradnik, representative of the Slovak Chemical Society Dr. Maria Omastova and director of the Polymer Institute SAN Dr. Józef Rychly. The Polish side was represented by the chairman of the Polymer Section of PTChem – prof. dr hab. Andrzej Duda (Centre for Molecular and Macromolecular Research in Łódź) and director of CMPW PAN prof. dr hab. Andrzej Dworak.

The official part of the meeting was an introduction to the main, working part of it, in which the heads of Polish and Slovak research teams presented and discussed the results of joint work presented in papers and at
